What Is The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges, also known as Bregagh Road or King’s Road in Game of Thrones, is a stunning avenue of beech trees located in Northern Ireland. Planted in the 18th century by James Stuart, the avenue was designed to create a mystical and impressive approach to his home, Gracehill House. Over time, the Dark Hedges have become even more impressive and famous than the Stuart family could have imagined.

Today, the Dark Hedges are one of the most photographed locations in Ireland, with Game of Thrones tours and sightseers visiting the area daily to capture the natural phenomena. However, the influx of visitors has unfortunately led to damage to the trees, with approximately 90 trees remaining. To preserve the trees for generations to come, new trees are being replanted in the spots where the old ones once stood, and Bregagh Road has been closed off to the public.

According to local legend, the Grey Lady can be seen flitting from tree to tree on a dark night. The spirit is thought to be either one of the house’s maids who died mysteriously or James Stuart’s daughter, known as “Cross Peggy.”

The Game of Thrones
In the world of Game of Thrones, the Dark Hedges famously appeared in Season 2, Episode 1: “The North Remembers.” It was where Arya Stark escaped from King’s Landing, disguised as a boy, with Yoren, Hot Pie, Gendry, and others who were on their way to join the Night’s Watch.
